    Instructions for authors

NAT is a journal for social research on alcohol and drugs and their related policies mainly from a Nordic perspective. The journal is published both in the Scandinavian languages (3-4 issues per year) and in English (2–3 issues per year). NAT publishes research reports, overviews, debates, commentaries, book reviews and Nordic alcohol statistics.

    Submitting a manuscript

Please send your submission to nat(at)stakes.fi We will confirm receipt of your manuscript as soon as possible, usually within one week.

    Basic requirements

Authors submitting to NAT are expected to adhere to the following principles:

    a) texts submitted should not have been published previously, either in part or in full (exceptions can be made for texts published in languages inaccessible to most journal readers, please inform the editors in which language the text has been published),

    b) texts should not be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere,

    c) all authors must have contributed substantially to the article and assume responsibility for its content,

    d) the research on which the article is based abides by established ethical principles.

Researchers should declare any sources of funding as well as any conflicts of interest.

Authors of original research papers will receive first proofs in PDF format.

Accepted submissions will also be published on the journal’s website (in PDF format) unless specifically prohibited by the author.

    Manuscript Length

Original research articles should not exceed 15 manuscript pages (approx. 35,000 characters). Reviews, commentaries and other similar contributions may vary in length from around 5 to 10 pages; book reviews should not exceed 5 manuscript pages.

    Manuscript Structure

Original research articles should include an abstract (approx. 1,000–1,500 characters) with proposed key words. Where appropriate, the abstract should be structured under the following headings: Aims, Design (or Methods, Data), Results, Conclusions.

The submission should include a separate front page that gives the title of the article, the name of the author/s, title/s and affiliations, postal and e-mail address/es and, if there is more than one author, the name of the corresponding author to whom proofs should be sent.

    Translations into English

NAT may be able to provide help with translations from and into English and other languages. Please contact the editorial team.

    Journal Style Guide

Figures and tables should be attached in separate files, preferably in Excel format.

Raw data for any figures should be attached separately. Each table and figure must have a title and/or legend that accurately describe its content. Indicate in the text where the tables and figures should appear.

Footnotes are to be placed at the end of the text.

To quote a reference in the text, give the surname of the author, year of publication and page numbers if applicable, e.g. (Pettersson 1982, 25–32).

The list of references should list all sources used in alphabetical order, indicating the author’s surname, first name, year of publication, title of the book or publication, place of publication and publisher. For journal articles, indicate the author’s surname and first name, year of publication, title of the article, name of publication, volume number, issue number and inclusive page numbers.
